A New Year’s Eve Celebration, Happy Twenty Dozen!

A few weeks ago, my good friend asked me to email her my resolutions for 2012. EMAIL?! I thought. I was reluctant because I’ve always doubted the power of resolutions, and this time they would be archived and she will surely hold me accountable. And to be honest, I’ve never been much of a New Year resolution maker. I’ve always thought that I don’t need the first of the year to set goals, and most New Year’s resolutions are usually forgotten in just a few weeks, anyways. But having entered my final year as a twenty-something, I figured a few new years resolutions could be good for me. So I sent them to her. Number one on my list of course, is to continue to grow my photography business!

There is a superstition that says “the way you bring in your new year is the way your year will go,” and if there is any truth to it, then I’m already off to a great start with my top goal for 2012. This New Years Eve I rang in the New Year photographing Jenna and Thomas’ 40s-themed New Year’s Eve celebration! Have you ever sat back and just watched what happens to people during the countdown? It’s quite amazing. And until this night, I didn’t understand it. The New Year is our opportunity to collect $200 and pass GO. It’s not starting over but its starting again with new chance and new hope. We’ve made it through the past year’s challenges, and somehow still have breath to rejoice in the triumphs.

I’m grateful for this new year, and for the new chance I have to get my resolutions and goals right once again, and for my friend who archived those resolutions.

Photo Essay | Coming of Age in Las Vegas

Our first family vacation was sometime around 1990 to visit Las Vegas.Â To the city that offers no windows or clocks while participating in it’s most popular activity. We flew Southwest and we stayed at the Excalibur. My brother and I played arcades at Circus Circus, and my mother drove us all out to the desert to visit a Marshmallow Factory. Today, any mention of that Marshmallow Factory brings rounds of laughter to my entire family.Â Why would anyone ever want to eat pink flavored marshmallows?!

Over the years, we made a couple other trips out to Vegas, including many New Year’s Eves and my week long 21st birthday celebration, but none would prove to be as memorable or impactful as the first, the first plane ride and the first unknown city.

My last trip to Vegas was a couple weeks ago. I spent those days reconciling what the city had become to my family and I. Two of my brothers graduated from UNLV. Las Vegas is where they found their voices and figured out what they wanted out of life. Las Vegas is also where they learned to appreciate the ups, and fight through the downs of life. And during that trip, Las Vegas is where I began to open my heart and find the courage to understand what it means to love the way that God loves, and forgive the way that God forgives.

This is what I saw while walking through the familiarity of The Strip.

She’s fiery, she’s perceptive, she’s compassionate. And in the 90′s, she was once a fugitive in my backyard. We were both grounded for that one.

It’s true, you really do look back at things in life and laugh! Haaaa! Although, there was nothing funny about our punishments. Which gets me thinking… what shenanigans will I have to look out for from my future young ones.

And again, I am reminded here to let go and laugh more.

Snow Day! Harlem USA

Today is a snow day! How cool is that? In LA, we might have gotten an El Nino day. But never a snow day. Living on the east really makes me appreciate what each season has to offer. I have to admit when my client in VA mentioned the snow they got last week, I was a wee bit jealous. Okay honestly, more than a wee bit. I LOVE SNOW. Love it! It makes me feel like I am seeing the world through a new set of eyes, like I am a child all over again learning what this world is about.

Miles and I just came in from a romp in the park. I am sitting here working, studying, watching the snow fall and eating my first PB&J sandwich in the last decade. Wondering, since when did these become so tasty?! Could it be the honey wheat bread and green tea addition?

And look what we found in Marcus Garvey Park, a snowman! What?! How cool are the kids in Harlem USA for this?!

Abbie + Jamal, a Wedding in Brooklyn

Abbie & Jamal were married at the Plymouth Church of the Pilgrims in Brooklyn Heights with a reception that followed at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. She wore an elegant, one-shouldered Vera Wang gown with flower details that was reminiscent of Michelle Obama’s inauguration gown.

I love to see how each couple makes their wedding their own. For Abbie and Jamal, it was their first dance. Jamal, a dancer, choreographed it. It definitely set the whole tone for the wedding. Their guests love to dance and worked it all night. Thanks to Jen Davis for letting me work with her on this wedding.

Lindsay + Brice, Engagement in the Military

Love finds you when you least expect it. Lindsay & Brice met in Pismo Beach, CA. Brice, originally from Missouri, was working there at the time and Lindsay happened to be visiting.Â She lived in Phoenix, AZ. After not being satisfied with long distance, he moved to be with her. And just a couple months ago, they were engaged.

Lindsay contacted me because at the last minute Brice was given an unexpected 4 day pass, which they planned to spend together in NYC. Brice is in the Military Police in the United States Army. A couple weeks ago, he deployed to Iraq, beginning a one year tour of duty.

I am honored that they chose me to capture their love at this time in their relationship. My gratitude is enormous for the men and women whose hearts lead them to serve. Thank you Brice for your courage and passion, and to your family for their strength.

Our session started in the heart of NYC, Times Square, and we walked to Central Park. Although, by the time we reached the park, it started to rain. It was a light rain but consistent, so we still got wet, and decided to end at the Columbus Circle Mall. Lindsay trooped it out and threw her hair into a ponytail. I love a girl who rolls with the punches.
